While a lot of them are over the top and exaggerated, they always have a believable core genuineness to them. The game's writer, Shu Takumi, who is also behind the majority of the Ace Attorney titles most consistent talent IMO is his ability to write memorable and compelling characters. And you have until sunrise to find the answers before your spirit fades away forever. And death has cost you your memory so you need to find out who you were, who killed you, and why. But the problem is you were the one killed. A murder in a junkyard at the edge of town and you're the only person that can solve it. The concept drew me in instantly from the original trailer.
Rather than tease the player for the entire thing around a single mystery, there are over half a dozen very interesting and complex ones interwoven so you are always feeling a sense of progress which makes the game move at a very crisp pace. You are constantly pursuing the mystery of the story, but obviously they can't give you the answers until basically until the end of the story. It's a very engaging and masterfully written experience and it is fairly short all things considered I can't imagine even the most curious person taking more than 15 hours to get to the credits.
And because we all know how important the story experience is from our respective experiences, we're not going to spoil the story, so unfortunately it does come down to "trust us, it's great" at the end of the day. The story, the writing, the style of presentation, and the characters is where the zeal is coming from. "Oh man, when I opened that fridge and a blender fell out? OMG, I died!". As you've seen already, fans of this game are very energized about praising it, but no one would get THAT passionate about any puzzle. This is a visual novel more than a puzzle game.
